When Sprinkles Cause a Sprint

When Sprinkles Cause a Sprint

A friend and I have been meeting a couple of mornings a week to walk on the trail together.  I enjoy the walking, and I love the company of my close friend.  She and I both recognize the need to be walking more for better health.  However, neither one of us is a morning person, and so it is a little too easy to find reasons to skip or postpone our walks.  “My alarm didn’t go off….I need a little more sleep today…....I have a full day ahead….perhaps we could walk tonight instead…”

Today was tempting to find one of those excuses.  As we stumbled out of our vehicles, we both shrugged and mumbled “good morning.” .  Our walk began somewhat slowly, but we were walking….we were doing what we had set out to do.

And then, the rain came….  It began to sprinkle, and suddenly we began to wake up.  As the rain picked up, our walking pace picked up significantly as we promptly turned around and headed back to the parking lot.  It was the quickest pace we had taken in a long time.  We laughed as I looked at her and said, “It sprinkles….she sprints.”

Sometimes, it takes some sprinkles to get us to pick up the pace.  There is a lot going on in our world right now.  The news is filled with stories of earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, church shootings, protests, threats of nuclear war, and more.  All of these remind us that life is a vapor and none of us know what the next day will bring.  It’s raining, friends, and we must pick up the pace!  You and I must act with a sense of urgency to share Christ.  There are so many right around us who do not yet know the hope and salvation they can find in Him!

Our sprint this morning did not last very long.  Once we arrived back at the parking lot, we decided to go on about the day.  By the time I drove across town, the rain had stopped.  As I neared my house, I approached a crossroads.  I could keep driving and go back to bed (which is what appealed to me most), or I could turn into the parking lot at the park and resume my walk.  I chose the latter.  As I did, I was reminded that we can’t stop what we know we are to do simply because the rains come or go.  The rains remind us of the urgency, but we must choose to share Him faithfully and consistently throughout the walk of life.
